Heisman Trophy

The Heisman Trophy was created in 1935 and designed to be given to the Most Outstanding College Football Player decided by members of the Downtown Athletic Club. The trophy itself was created by sculptor, Frank Eliscu who was also a National Academy Prize Winner. He sculpted the trophy after Ed Smith, who was one of the players on the 1934 New York University Team. The trophy was later approved by the committee and was formed into a bronze trophy. The statue is 14” long and 13.1/2 high and weighs 25lbs. The first award recipient ever of the Heisman Trophy was Jay Berwanger who played for Chicago and put up incredible numbers in 23 games. In 1936, a football legend in John W. Heisman died and the committee decided to name the trophy after him in remembrance for all that he did for the game of football. In 1968, the committee also decided to award two trophies each year. One would go to the winner himself and the other would go to the college or university he attended.
Over the years, many great players have been honored by receiving this prestigious award. Some that have won it are Roger Staubach from Navy in 1960, O.J. Simpson from USC in 1968, Earl Campbell from Texas in 1977, and Marcus Allen from USC in 1981. All four of these men went on to having terrific careers in the NFL as well. Even more recently, some of the greats who have won the award are Ricky Williams from Texas in 1998, Chris Weinke from Florida State in 2000, Matt Leinart from USC in 2004 and Tim Tebow from Florida in 2007. All of these men had put up numbers that were never seen before and really took college football to the next level.
In the 2010 Heisman race, the four Finalists were Quarterback Cam Newton from Auburn, Quarterback Kellen Moore from Boise State, Quarterback Andrew Luck from Stanford and Running Back LaMichael James from Oregon. Cam Newton came away with the award after throwing for 2,500 yards and rushing for over 1,000 yards. His 6’6”, 250 lb. Frame made him one of the most versatile players of all time in College Football History.
